The utility treats your water and delivers it to your building. From the tank on your roof to the tap in your wall, it is no longer the utility's water. It is yours, and in Dubai's heat a storage tank is not a neutral vessel.

What the domain covers

Not the supply. The path it travels once the supply ends.

Dubai's water arrives from the utility treated to a high standard: desalinated, disinfected, held within defined limits for residual chlorine, dissolved solids and turbidity.4 The supply is rarely the problem. The path is. In most UAE villas that water first fills an underground tank, then a pump lifts it to a rooftop tank that feeds the taps below by gravity. At every step it is stored, and stored water is where the trouble starts: sediment from the desalinated supply settles and beds the biofilm that shields bacteria from disinfectant,3 while the sun-exposed rooftop tank warms into the range where that growth accelerates. The tap downstream shows none of it. The Water domain is built to cover that whole path, the part the utility does not own and the eye cannot read.

Where safe water goes wrong

The utility's duty ends at the boundary. From the underground tank to the rooftop tank to the tap, the path is the building owner's, and in this climate it does not look after itself.

A common belief, corrected

The sun does not boil your tank clean.

It is a fair assumption: Dubai's heat is fierce, so surely it sterilises the water. The temperatures say the opposite.

The belief

  • The rooftop tank gets so hot in summer it must kill whatever is in the water.
  • Heat is like boiling: the hotter the tank, the safer the water.
  • So a sun-baked tank needs less cleaning, not more.

What the heat actually does

  • The water does get hot. Rooftop surfaces in the UAE can exceed 70°C, and stored tank water routinely climbs past 40°C, hot enough to make a cold shower impossible in summer.
  • But uncomfortable is not sterile. Disinfection by heat needs about 60°C held for minutes, or 70°C to kill on contact. Water in the 40s does not come close.3
  • Worse, 25 to 45°C is the range where waterborne bacteria multiply fastest. Warm tank water breeds them, it does not kill them.3
  • And concrete roofs hold heat well past sunset, so the water stays in that warm band for hours, while the heat never touches the biofilm and sediment shielding the bacteria.

In short: the heat that feels like it should sterilise the tank is the very thing holding it in the bacterial growth range, for hours, every summer day. The only way to know what is actually in there is to clean the tank and measure the water.

Why we measure it this way

Two ways to judge the same glass of water.

The difference between a household check and a laboratory one is not care. It is what the check can actually see.

The eye test

  • Clarity, colour and smell, at the moment you happen to look.
  • Misses microbial load entirely: bacteria and biofilm are invisible.
  • Cannot read residual chlorine, dissolved solids or what sediment is feeding.
  • Answers whether it looks clean, not whether it is.

The laboratory reading

  • Microbial activity cultured and counted, not estimated from appearance.
